Connecticut Post
by Aaron Leo
TRUMBULL — Megan
Hannan, of Fairfield, doesn't just like KC and the
Sunshine Band.
"
All my wedding songs were KC and the Sunshine
Band," she said while watching Harry "KC" Wayne Casey boogie in Indian Ledge
Park Thursday night. "We used to dance to this," said Hannan's mother, Judy Mori,
of Trumbull. "These guys are really good."
Hannan said she's seen KC and the Sunshine Band, which scored disco hits throughout
the 1970s such as "That's the Way I Like It," in concert three times over the
last several
years.
Kim Nagy, of Bridgeport, is not ashamed to admit her love of
disco. "I was a big disco fan back in the 1980s and I still am," she said as
she and two of her friends waited for a shuttle to take them from the farthest
parking lot. Cars filled up all the lots and some concert-goers had to take a
bus from Trumbull High School. Kool & the Gang was also scheduled to play.
Tickets were $35 for lawn seats and $45 for chairs.
Marika Fenyvesi, of Shelton, originally from Europe, knows KC and the Sunshine
Band from its heyday. "We know a lot of their songs. In Europe, we listened to
them on records," she
said. Kool & the Gang fans also weighed in. "I saw Kool & the Gang last
year when they were on the Green in New Haven," said Geralene Valentine, of Monroe,
a friend of Nagy. The concert fit in with Daniela Kalapir's musical style, which
is varied. The Bridgeport resident attended with Nagy and
Valentine. "My husband likes all music. I've never been to more concerts" since
meeting him, she said. She said she attends about four a year, from Elton John
and Janet Jackson to Nickelback.
When they arrived at the stage area, KC
was performing "Shake Your Booty." He wore black pants, a black T-shirt and a
black sport jacket covered with spangly crosses.
Then, he wiped his forehead with a black handkerchief and threw it into the cheering
crowd. Dancers dressed in black gyrated on stage while wearing fluorescent boas
and later danced a
little risque with KC before he launched into "Boogie Shoes." KC took a few moments
to address the crowd, which ranged from toddlers to adults. "I turned 56 years
old this year," KC said. "What the hell happened?" "Yeah, I'm a baby
boomer," he added. Scanning the audience, he spoke to the younger viewers. "We
were your mother's 'N Sync. Get a good look at me. This is what Justin Timberlake
is going to look like in 30 years," he said. To accentuate his age, he joked
that he was making music 33 years ago when Cher was on her farewell
tour.

Save Hialeah
Park!!
Please see the attached letter regarding
this matter and post on our New
Forum for this effort
January 25, 2007
America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places
National Trust for Historic Preservation
1785 Massachusetts Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20036
To Whom It May Concern:
The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation is writing to
support the nomination of the Hialeah Park Race Track to
the America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places List
for 2007.
The Hialeah Park Race Track is the oldest and widest turf
horse racetrack in the United States. The racetrack is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places and is also eligible
for listing as a National Historic Landmark. This important
historic landmark has contributed not only to the development
of the city of Hialeah, but has also played a positive role
in the development of tourism in South Florida.
Recently, the Citizens of South Florida for the Preservation
of the Hialeah Race Track contacted the Florida Trust informing
us of the imminent threat to the racetrack by the proposal
of a large multi-use development plan. This proposed development
has the potential of adversely affecting the Hialeah Park
Race Track, and if it continues as planned, would result
in the removal of the site from the National Register and
from consideration for National Historic Landmark status.
It’s our opinion that, with the right level of support
nationally, regionally, and locally, preservationists will
have the opportunity to work with the developers for this
proposed project and minimize the effects to this nationally-significant
historic site. The media attention generated by listing on
the America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places List
could considerably increase the success in saving this site.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Becky Clarke
President

Wow...KC has a Busy July! Here are
some highlights of the month!
Boogie Blast The Best
KC life of the party as fans shake their bootie at funky disco
review
By Dennis Armstrong Ottawa Sun
KC & THE SUNSHINE Band and a few of their
friends turned Bluesfest's Festival Plaza into Studio 54 for
a closing night party.
|
And if unsolicited audience
participation is any indication, it was clear that fans
were in a major mood to party.
Despite the lingering high temperatures,
a surprising number of people turned out in tacky disco
wear, with one woman bringing her own disco ball hung
from a fishing rod.
Not since the New York Dolls gig last
year have so many fans been eager to relive a bit of
their youth, and enjoy some absolutely fabulous funk
with KC & The Sunshine Band's free-spirited Boogie
Blast with '70s disco icons Tavares,
|
 |
Sister Sledge and Gloria Gaynor.
Never regarded as a serious musical talent,
KC's Disco Blast nonetheless turned out to be a totally entertaining,
with nonstop dancing, cheesy DJs and a pageant of dance hits
that made disco a global phenomenon.
With the main stage decked out like a disco,
complete with lounge chairs and giant disco ball, the revue-style
show kicked off with a funky fanfare of Signed, Sealed, Delivered,
I'm Yours and a platoon of boa-ed dancers in various states
of undress while KC, looking remarkably unchanged from his
'70s heyday, saddled up behind the keyboards to play his anthem
Shake Your Booty and later Boogie Man.
"This is what Justin Timberlake is going
to look like in 33 years," the 55-year-old KC joked.
A quick costume change and KC was back to
sing another hit, Boogie Shoes, an overheated romantic plea
Please Don't Go, a solidly phat cover of Brick House and a
booty-shaking That's The Way I Like It.
Much of KC's vocals and dance floor moves
have survived remarkably intact. Sadly, time hasn't been quite
as kind to Tavares, who had a hard time staying in tune during
More Than A Woman, although they had a much better time of
it later on with Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel.
Sister Sledge was also terrific rallying the
crowds with We Are Family.
Meanwhile, the fans were dancing anywhere
they could -- on the sidewalks, in City Hall's foyer, the
Festival Plaza fountain, even their own VIP chairs.
The hit of the show was diva Gloria Gaynor,
who sang her anthems Never Can Say Goodbye and I Will Survive.
It was the biggest, baddest night to send
off the 2006 festival. Perhaps Bluesfest organizers should
consider launching a whole new dance series.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my email regarding
Hialeah Park. As I mentioned our efforts with the Park started
in earnest several months ago. We discovered that it was
in immiment danger of being redeveloped and found this shocking.
Through our efforts we’ve encountered a number of people
with similar concerns regarding the future of the park. Among
those several local journalists who have broached the subject
in several articles (links below).
It’s apparent that Hialeah Park owner John Brunetti
(a developer) is serious about a plan to build condo and
apartment units, plus nearly a million square feet of retail
and office space on his 220-acre parcel. The city council
recently approved and removed the historic designation of
the horse stables, thus allowing Brunetti to tear them down.
I wanted to provide you some background history regarding
track. In a nutshell, the the sport of horseracing has suffered
a decline from its heyday. Although the park was a legendary
hotspot in its prime, by the eighties and nineties, business
had fallen off severely. Added to that, two competing tracks,
Calder and Gulfstream, were able to get the state legislature
to deregulate racing dates. The two cooperating tracks took
the good dates and left Hialeah with unmarketable scraps.
The horses stopped running in May 2001, and since then, the
park has mostly been just a backdrop for weddings, proms,
and quince parties. The park's 220 acres make it extremely
valuable land (easily upwards of $200 million).
Our challenge is to gather enough allies to make saving
the park not only a viable, but politically necessary option.
Already The local Urban Environment League is backing our
cause. A racing industry exective has also traveled to the
San Diego Zoo, which is interested in making sure the famous
flamingo population at Hialeah is protected. Nominations
are also underway with the Dade County Heritage Trust as
well as the Florida Trust.
Ways to help:
· It would be a huge help if you could assist with
support letters to some of our local politicians and Florida
Governor Charlie Crist. Below I've provided the contact information.

· Also our website, www.savehialeahpark.com is in
it's begining stages. We would love to post a quote or letter
of support from you.
· In the near future we would like to organize a
benefit concert with various artist to support, our non-profit
organization (currently in the works).
· Spreading the word through the media or additional
contacts is also something we're looking to do. We've found
that people from all walks of life have a true passion for
this park.
· We're open to any thoughts or ideas you may have.

Down Tonight!
Grammy Winning Pop
Legend KC Falls From Stage
Boogie Shoes Blamed
(Los Angeles, CA) Grammy winning pop legend
KC of KC and the Sunshine Band is recovering today in his
Miami home after taking a dive off the stage while performing
at the Cinco De Mayo Festival in Phoenix, AZ on May 7th. The
singer, best known for his chart-topping hits from the ‘70’s
(Get Down Tonight, (That’s The Way) I Like It and (Shake,
Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty,) was performing in front of
an estimated 5,000 people when the accident occurred.
KC blames his boogie shoes for the fall. Two
songs into his 75 minute set, KC fell head first onto the
concrete and six feet below the stage at the outdoor arena.
Ironically, it occurred as KC began singing his classic hit
Boogie Shoes. I left my shoes at the hotel and had to perform
in a new pair he lamented. I picked the wrong pair of Boogie
Shoes!
After quickly receiving some first aid backstage,
the singer resumed his performance and sought medical attention
afterwards at a local hospital, receiving six stitches over
his right eye, and treatment for a knee sprain and various
bumps and bruises.
The show must go on, though. KC, 54, will
continue his tour with his Sunshine Band, with stops in Winter
Haven, FL on May 13 and Atlanta, GA on May 14.

KC will be on live with Louis to discuss the
evening’s “Idol” results, getting KC’s
comments as WSVN’s local “celebrity judge.”

K.C.'s
band kicks things off at festival's VIP opener
By Ivette M. Yee
Staff Writer
Posted April 22 2005
Cranes
lifting acrobats to the heavens, giant disco balls spinning
to infectious beats, an open bar -- this is Day 1 of SunFest,
South Florida's largest waterfront art and music festival.
It runs Wednesday through May 1 in downtown West Palm Beach.
The 22-year-old festival attracts more than
300,000 people each year, and this year it is changing formats
to add more entertainment and entice newcomers who are intimidated
by crowds.
That means a smaller, higher-priced kickoff
event designed by Palm Beach party guru Bruce Sutka featuring
Cirque Du Soleil-themed entertainment, festival food samplings
and K.C. and the Sunshine Band.
Admission is $50 per person and includes open
bar, food and the concert.
"I think when people go to a club and
see the VIP areas, they think, `What does it take to get in
there?'" said Greg Fagan, SunFest board president. "With
the opening-night event, they will know. It will be one big
VIP area."
In the past, opening night featured a concert
lineup and drew 20,000. This year, attendance is being capped
at 5,000. So far, organizers said they haven't received any
complaints, and half of the tickets are sold. Overall ticket
sales are up 26 percent, they said.
"The SunFest audience is changing,"
said Paul Jamieson, SunFest executive director. "We now
have a hard-core audience looking for more amenities and less
crowds, so we thought we'd take one night of the festival
and make it a different experience, make it more party like."
Those who want to stick with the familiar
festival format will just have to wait a day for the melange
of music. Concerts take place simultaneously on three stages
and will begin on Thursday, with the ultimate partier, Nelly
(Country Grammar, Ride Wit Me, Hot in Herre). His current
single, Over and Over, features country star Tim McGraw.
From hip-hop to '80s rock, a leather-clad
Billy Idol and his trademark snarl will perform on April 29.
Other entertainers during the five-day festival
include bluesman Jonny Lang on Thursday, followed by Lisa
Marie Presley and the reggae band Steel Pulse on April 29.
Latin singer Obie Bermúdez performs on April 30, and
pop sensation Ryan Cabrera and hip-hop maestro Wyclef Jean
perform on May 1.
The final day of the festival has been named
"The Sunday Rock Revival," showcasing modern rock
with a slate of bands which organizers picked up from the
defunct Zetafest, including Silvertide, Breaking Benjamin
and 3 Doors Down.
"This is our most diverse and exciting
lineup ever," Jamieson said. "There's not a weak
night in there."
Reserved seating for all concerts is being
offered for the first time for an additional $8 to $15. SunFest
tickets cost $17 in advance and $20 at the gate.
The SunFest juried art show will open a day
earlier this year with a wine-and-cheese reception from 6-8
p.m. Thursday. More than 165 artists are showing their artwork.
A major addition to the festival this year
is GameRiot, a cutting-edge video arcade with 25 new and unreleased
games at 64 gaming stations.
Gamers can kick it with Halo 2, Tony Hawk's
Underground 2 and more for cash and prizes.
Youngsters can frolic at the Youth Park and
Stage, which will be moved to the festival's south end, in
Trinity Park. The stage will showcase live family entertainment,
including Elmo Live and the Kazoobie Kazoo Show.
Adults can mingle at Captain Morgan's Floating
Oasis, a floating bar on the Intracoastal Waterway. An additional
party barge has been added this year, bringing the total to
three. Each will be themed to feature country music from WIRK
(FM 107.9), dance tunes from WLDI (FM 95.5) or oldies from
KOOL 105.5 WOLL (FM 105.5).
Ivette M. Yee can be reached at imyee@sun-sentinel.com
or 561-243-6538.

KC
& The Sunshine Band Bring a Unique Fusion of R & B
and Funk to Orillia
The Berrie Examiner
Fri 25 Feb 2005
Page: C1 / Front
Section: Entertainment
Byline: Susan Doolan

The disco king returns to Casino Rama. KC, who's real name
is Harry Wayne Casey, plans a '70s flashback night jammed
packed with hits like Get Down Tonight, That's the Way (I
Like It) and Shake Your Booty. The kind of music - a unique
fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion
groove - continues to draw fans to more than 100 concerts
a year all over the globe
."Just bring back as many memories as we can and create
a many new ones as we can," said KC, from his Florida
home, of his only Canadian dates this weekend. "We were
there last year - it was amazing.".
He and his 15-piece 'Sunshine Band' celebrated their 30
anniversary two years ago. Over the years, there is very little the singer/songwriter
and keyboard player hasn't accomplished - sales of 100 million
records, nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards and
an American Music Award.
His songs have been featured on television shows, such
as Ally McBeal, and more than 75 movies including Forrest
Gump and the Austin Powers' Goldmember.
He's been the subject of a book That's The Way I Like It
- The Harry Wayne Casey Story, published in 2002. The same
year KC also received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The following year, he appeared in the feature film The
Wedding Party (starring Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks). All
of this is well beyond his dreams. Is there anything left
that he would still like to do?"I think the only thing
would be to continue to do what I'm doing - healthy, happy
and all of that sort of stuff," he said "You know
I've always left it up to God - I mean really destiny - to
map out my future so you never really know which way that's
going to go - what else is in store for me - and I try not
to guess at what could be in store."
"Maybe a motion picture - not sure I'm an actor. Maybe
one or two more successful albums. Right now I'm just having
a wonderful time touring and seeing all these wonderful places
we get to go to, exchanging different cultures and lifestyles."He
continues to record. His last album, I'll Be There For You,
was a collection of songs he had "sitting on the shelf."It
came out in the fall of 2001 and proceeds from the title song,
released as a single, were donated to the Sept. 11 relief
effort.
Music and singing was always a part of family occasions
during KC's growing-up years. He knew from a very early age
it would be his life."All my life - it's all I ever thought
of - all I dreamed of," he said."It's like I just
knew it. I had this gut feeling that's what I was here to
do."KC wrote his first song at 16. Rather than talking
about his feelings and problems, with a girlfriend, people
or life, KC preferred to write about it in a song.By 17, he
was working for a recording studio complex, doing menial tasks
in hometown Miami. The Sunshine Band was formed in 1973 and
the rest is music history.Today, he has his own publishing
company where he manages bands such as No Mercy.
KC & The Sunshine Band perform tonight and Saturday
at Casino Rama at 9 p.m.Doors open at 8 p.m. Advance tickets
to the 19+ show are $20 and $25 at the door.
Tickets are available at the Casino Rama Box Office, or
call Ticketmaster at 739-7666. |

ready to dance the night away with DiscoMania, a concert and
dance extravaganza which kicks off in June, headlined by KC
& The Sunshine Bad. DiscoMania also stars The Village
People, The Trammps featuring Earl Young, Evelyn “Champagne”
King and Martha Wash. The first leg of DiscoMania will include
such cities as Boston, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Atlanta, and
more, dancing its way across the country, ending up on the
west coast in August, including an appearance at The Greek
Theatre in Hollywood.DiscoMania is an extraordinary lineup
of legendary 70’s superstars performing party-jumping,
funk-knocking, slick-slamming hits that will transport audiences
back to a time when disco balls, strobe lights, feathered
hair and bell-bottom pants were all the rage. With sales of
over 100 million records, nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy
Awards and an American Music Award, KC & The Sunshine
Band have established themselves as a leading force in the
music industry. Their unique fusion of R&B and funky dance
beats has produced hits like Get Down Tonight, That's the
Way (I Like It) and Shake Your Booty bringing KC & The
Sunshine Band to the forefront of American popular music over
and over again. The Village People, assembled in the late 1970’s,
produced well-known songs such as Y.M.C.A., Macho Man and
In The Navy. They won a number of worldwide awards including
an American Music Award, AGVA's Georgie Award and West Germany's
Gold Lion Award. In addition, they starred in their own movie,
“Can’t Stop The Music,” in 1980.The highlight
of The Trammps career was their 1970’s record, Disco
Inferno, featuring the hit single by the same title. Disco
Inferno was included on the “Saturday Night Fever”
soundtrack and earned The Trammps a Grammy Award in 1979.Evelyn
“Champagne” King’s versatile vocal and musical
ability has been pleasing audiences for the last three decades
with such hits as “Shame,” from her debut album
Smooth Talk, “I’m in Love,” “I Don’t
Know if It’s Right,” and “Hold On.”Martha
Wash, half of the successful duo the Weather Girls, recorded
the tongue-in-cheek It’s Raining Men, which is still
a huge dance hit. She is also known for the larger-than-life
voice heard throughout the song Sweat (Everybody Dance Now),
the multi-platinum hit recorded by C&C Music Factory. For

Get Down Tonight-KC
and The Sunshine Band Celebrating 30 Years With A Fresh Tour
Story by Matt Meisenger
When Harry Wayne Casey was growing
up in the Miami suburb of Hialeah, the sounds of Motown and
R&B were steeped in his soul. Listing his mother as a
main influence, the man currently internationally known as
KC of KC & the Sunshine Band says that he was struck by
the organ music flowing at her church.
"My
mother always danced around the house to Ray Charles, The
Flamingoes, whatever was on the radio," Casey told Chicago
Innerview by phone recently from his home, not far from where
he was born in 1951. There was no other profession that could
pique young KC's interest.

Feel-good disco from KC, No Sitting
At Sunshine Show
Jerry West - The Daily News
Watching KC and the Sunshine Band play
is like mainlining sugar. Within minutes, your energy spikes,
as the lights flash and the 10-piece band pumps out a wall
of sound.
Four dancers in hot pants, two of whom are
backup singers, take the stage and start the visual spectacle,
and then KC himself bursts on the scene in a gold shirt. He’s
quite the showman, working both sides of the stage, making
one-to-one contact with members of the audience, and egging
them up onto the dance floor.
